Salary cap crunch keeps Roberts from Titans return

A tight salary cap is keeping former Titans playmaker Tyrone Roberts from an Australian reunion.

The former Titans halfback is set to cut his lucrative three-year Super League contract short out of homesickness for Australia. However, a welcome back to the Titans seems unlikely given the status of Gold Coast’s cap spending for 2019, precluding Roberts from a substantial offer. Roberts joined the Wolves from the Titans in a three-year contract, inclusive of an option to return home at the end of the 2018 season, which Roberts is exercising following just one season of play with Warrington. Titans coach Garth Brennan said he’d love to see the return of Roberts as a utility back, however, the club has over-committed. “I have spoken to Tyrone’s management but I don’t think we can get anywhere near the money he is on [at Warrington],” Brennan told titans.com.au. “To have someone who can cover nine, seven, six and one is a real attraction. But whether he is willing to come back in that utility role and on that sort of utility money is the stumbling block.” The 27-year-old took the Titans to the finals in 2015 in his most consistent year of play. His first preference is to be reunited with marquee halfback Ash Taylor on the Gold Coast – though only a real possibility if the Titans negotiate to offload other players to cater for him.
