Brayshaw bidding war: the push to secure a star

Angus Brayshaw’s breakout season has attracted keen interest from rival clubs.

Out-of-contract Melbourne star Angus Brayshaw is captivating attention from rivals approaching this season’s end, following an exceptional breakout year. The Demons in theory have enough to accomodate Brayshaw on a cushy $550,000 per year deal – but the Roos have enough scope to offer the star a long-term deal in the vicinity of $700,000 per year. Brayshaw this year has taken precedence alongside Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn and would prove a worthy addition to North Melbourne, who have been closely watching the top midfield target.

Melbourne’s head of football Josh Mahoney quashed speculation the star was looking elsewhere, suggesting the Demons’ No.3 draft pick is moving closer to re-signing with the club. “I’m sure everyone will be into Angus (Brayshaw) at the moment,” he told SEN Breakfast. “He’s only said really good things about staying in Melbourne which is a positive sign. “We’re really happy with how it’s going and I don’t think it’s too far away from getting something done there. We both decided that we wanted to see him play a little bit more football until mid-season with his management and us.” A string of concussions last year left the break-out star with only two games played last season; but Brayshaw this year has finally found continuity, averaging 27 disposals per game and becoming a coveted rising figure worthy of a bidding war.
